Transportation Planner Joins MPC Staff

The Metropolitan Planning Commission welcomed Alan Huff to its staff in July. Alan joined the Transportation Planning division as a Transportation Planner II, coming to us from Vineland, New Jersey, a small community in the southern part of the state, original home of the Welch's grape products empire.

In Vineland, Alan worked for the local Metropolitan Planning Organization. In fact, Alan has worked with several MPOs across the country, including Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IA, Cape Cod, MA, and Metropolitan Boston, in addition to south Jersey. His extensive background in transportation planning has gained him wide-ranging expertise in public outreach, safety planning, and environmental justice.

Alan earned a Bachelor of Science in Community and Regional Planning from Iowa State University and a Masters in City and Regional Planning from Rutgers University. His professional interests include community outreach and transparency, safety issues, promotion of mode choice, regional coordination, and fiscally-sustainable infrastructure design. Alan will be working with MPC's Transportation staff on PlanET, the three-year regional planning effort funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and he will be updating the Public Participation Plan and the Mobility Plan. Alan also will be looking at expanding MPC's presence in the social media environment.

Alan is excited to be closer to family in nearby Oak Ridge and is already enjoying the friendly atmosphere and more leisurely pace that the Knoxville region has to offer.
