Historic Preservationist Ann Bennett Retires From MPC

After nearly 30 years as MPC's historic preservation planner, Ann Bennett has announced her retirement, effective September 2, 2011. Since 1982, Ann has been involved in just about every major historic preservation initiative in Knoxville and Knox County, beginning with the creation of a countywide historic sites inventory, and building an expertise that has earned her recognition as one of the area's foremost preservationists.

Prior to coming to Knoxville, Ann served in a similar capacity in Memphis, working with agencies there on a variety of historic preservation issues. Ann's role at MPC has included serving as the agency's primary staff support to the Knoxville and Knox County Historic Zoning Commissions, making recommendations affecting the renovation of properties in historic neighborhoods throughout the community. She has also assisted these neighborhoods in developing design guidelines to preserve their historic and architectural integrity, as well as maintained close contact with neighborhood leaders in addressing preservation concerns and opportunities. Winner of several awards for her work, Ann has maintained collaborative relationships with such groups as Knox Heritage and the Tennessee Historical Commission, and she has worked closely with city and county community development staff to protect and preserve our area's valued historic resources.

In her retirement, Ann will continue to work with Knox Heritage on a part-time basis, maintaining her interest in serving our community. She will also be able to dedicate more energy to her two favorite pastimes, gardening and quilting, and soon, will add a third pastime?being a doting grandmother with the arrival of her first grandchild.

Ann will be missed by her colleagues and fellow workers for the dedication and passion she has shown in her work. Her accomplishments and contributions to our community will be her lasting legacy.
