Long-Time Addressing Specialist Shirley Mase to Retire
Twenty-five years ago, the price of gasoline reached a hefty 89 cents a gallon, the Simpsons premiered on television airwaves, and disposable contacts were introduced to farsighted consumers. Notable events all, but none had as great an impact on the Knoxville community as another milestone of 1987, the hiring of Shirley Mase in MPC's Addressing Department.
For more than 25 years, Shirley has quietly gone about the business of tending to an important public service that has benefitted tens of thousands of Knoxville and Knox County residents?she has worked diligently to provide correct addresses to all homes, businesses, churches, and many other structures throughout our community, ensuring that emergency service providers, mail carriers, utility companies, and countless other users can reliably find their destinations or conduct their business.
A task simple in concept but very complex in execution, Shirley has assigned new addresses, converted old rural route numbers, and fixed problem addresses by the thousands over her two-dozen plus years of service, working with citizens, E-911 officials, and utility companies each day. She has seen the technology of addressing work evolve from a process that relied on hand-drawn paper maps to one requiring highly advanced, computerized mapping skills.
After her many years of working for the citizens of Knox County, Shirley has decided to retire. Her expertise, professionalism, and customer service talents will be greatly missed. Shirley will enjoy having much more time to spend with her children and grandchildren, her rose garden, and other pursuits.
With tremendous gratitude for all her contributions, we wish our friend and co-worker Shirley Mase all the best in her retirement.
