APPROVE Certificate 1-A-18-DT subject to the following:1) A minimum clearance with the sidewalk of 9 feet shall be maintained for all awning framing, unless approved otherwise by the Board of Zoning Appeals, and the valances must maintain a minimum sidewalk clearance of 8 feet.

Applicant Request
:
    • Installation of eight awnings, one within each of the eight storefront bays on the Gay Street elevation. The awnings will attach to the storefront between the storefront glass and transom, and will project 4'-3". The storefront is setback 2'-10" from the front of the building so the awning will only project 1'-5" past the front of the building. The awning framing will maintain a minimum clearance with the sidewalk of 9'-2" and the valance will maintain a minimum clearance of 8'-8" with the sidewalk. The valance will hange loose and not have framing.

    • Awnings are allowed on historic buildings when they are appropriate to the building and are designed with traditional shapes, forms, and materials. If awnings are used, their overall size, shape, and projection from the building must be in proper proportion and scale to the building and contained within the window or door they shelter, and not cover adjacent wall surfaces. Canvas is usually the appropriate material for awnings.
    • GUIDELINES:
    • 8a. Allow awnings in traditional shapes and materials.
    • 8b. Contain signs or advertising only within the valance of the awning.
