Staff Comments
This building is located in the Southern Terminal & Warehouse (National Register) Historic District, so the Historic Resources section of the guidelines apply (Section 1.C). The Historic Resources guidelines recommend that signs not be internally illuminated. The board has approved internal illumination in the past but has consistently only approved it when light is able to penetrate only a portion of the sign face, such as the letters and decorative elements. The face of the proposed hanging sign has two planes, the large red background with the cream border is on the main cabinet and the words "Pour" and "Taproom", and the horizontal lines above Taproom, extend 5 inches from the main cabinet and are enclosed within their own cabinets. The proposed sign has acrylic faces on all planes, which will allow light to penetrate all portions of the sign face (excluding sides). Staff is recommending that the faces on the main cabinet (background) be made of metal, which will then only allow light to penetrate the extended portions of the sign with the letters and horizontal lines. This recommendation applies only to the red portion of the background and does allow for the border detail to be routed out and allow light to pass through that portion only.
