Staff Recommendation

Applicant Request
Extension of the existing roofline over what is currently a patio on the east side of the building. The patio was once part of the eastern wing of this building before a fire destroyed this portion leaving only the partial height stone walls, which will remain (see the attached photographs). The roof was patched on the remaining portion of the building and detailed similarly to the old gable and roof overhang.

The new roof extension will match the profile and appearance of the existing roof. The new roof will have shingles to match the existing and the new gable will have asphalt shingles to match the existing gable.

The roof will be supported by wood scissor trusses, 8 x 10 wood beams, 8 x 8 wood columns and new wood brackets. The wood columns will be anchored to a new concrete foundation that is inset 10 inches (to the center) from the existing stone wall. The inset columns will require that the new brackets also be inset, however, the brackets will be detailed the same as the existing and will be scaled similarly.

Staff Comments
Section 1.C (Historic Resources) of the guidelines will apply for this proposal because the building is located in the Southern Terminal and Warehouse (National Register) Historic District.
