Additions
    • Revised 2-6-2018: Enclose the front wall of the remaining half of the carport facing Kenyon Street. Beginning 32 inches from the corner of the existing house, install a row of four abutting double-hung windows that are each 27"x 48" in size. The remaining wall will be covered in cedar shake siding matching the siding on top gable of the house with landscaping continued. A small footer will be poured to support the wall where the existing concrete slab doesn't currently cover. Wood trim will be added to mimic the style and color of the original windows existing on the front of house. The material below the window is to be a 16" high split-faced block wall.
    • Remaining portions of wall will be covered with cedar shake siding to match the gable-end of house. A 1x4 pressure-treated trimboard, painted to match, will be used as a transition to separate the existing wood siding from the cedar shake siding. Landscaping will be continued across the front of the block wall to screen the retaining wall. The remaining 62 inches of the carport opening to the west of the windows will be enclosed and sheathed in matching T111.

Applicable Guidelines
Old North Knoxville Design Guidelines, adopted by the Knoxville City Council on November 25, 2004.
    • 1) Locate exterior additions at the rear of or on an inconspicuous side of a historic building, limiting the size and scale in relationship to the historic building, and using appropriate proportions.
    • 2) Design new additions so that it is clear what is historic and what is new.
    • 3) Consider the attached exterior addition both in terms of the new use and the appearance of other buildings in the historic district. Additions shall be distinguishable from the historic building, but shall be compatible in terms of mass, materials, size, texture, and scale. Additions shall be designed so they can be removed without destroying the form of the historic building.
    • 4) New additions should not be visible from streets.
    • 5) Before expanding the size of the historic building with a new addition, try reconfiguring interior space that does not define the historic character of the building in order to accommodate the new space needs.
    • 6) Do not cause a loss of historic character through a new addition.
