Census of Population and Housing

The U.S. Census Bureau’s decennial Census of Population and Housing shows the count of people who live in an area and their demographic information.

Overview

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau counts each resident in the United States, as mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution. Prior to the 2010 census, the Census Bureau issued each household in the country one of two forms, a short form or a long form. The short form collected basic information about sex, race, ethnicity and housing units. The long form collected very detailed data on demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics. With full implementation of the American Community Survey (ACS) in 2005, the Census Bureau discontinued use of the decennial long form. As a result, the decennial census is now simply a short-form survey gathering basic population indicators, like age, race, ethnicity, and a count of housing units. The more detailed long-form queries are conducted annually through the ACS.
